Bypass pin kits consist of
- Ball lock pins (quick release pins / locking pins / safety pins) with a red T-handle
- Retaining lanyards
- Warning streamer
Bypass pin kits are used in Ground Support Equipment (GSE). They serve as landing gear pins or steering bypass pins for pushback operations.
When the pin is inserted, the steering hydraulics on the landing gear are bypassed. This allows the aircraft to be moved by a tow tractor without the need to deactivate the entire aircraft hydraulic system. The pin must be removed after pushback. A 'Remove Before Flight' (RBF) warning streamer is attached to the ball lock pin via a retaining lanyard. The aircraft types for which the bypass pin kit is compatible are printed on the back of the streamer. The pin features a red button/handle that is easy to operate, even when wearing work gloves.
The bypass pin kits for Airbus aircraft are equivalent to part numbers:
- Part number D23156000 for aircraft types A318, A319, A320, A330, and A340
- Part number 001SP9000 for aircraft types A350 and A380.
